LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Three firefighters were injured while battling a fire that destroyed a dozen apartments in south Louisville.

The injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, according to Fairdale Fire Chief Don Wittry.

He told The Courier Journal the fire at the Legacy Apartments on Monday evening appears to have started from food being cooked in one unit and it quickly spread to 11 other apartments.

Wittry said the roof caved in, forcing firefighters to retreat from what he described as "a really big fire."

The Red Cross helped those displaced by the fire and aided residents of about 24 other apartments where electricity had been temporarily shut off.
