KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A Kansas City fire truck has struck and killed a 7-year-old boy while headed to a call with its lights and sirens flashing.

The Kansas City Star is reporting that the boy was killed around 3:40 p.m. Monday about a block away from his school.

Kansas City School District Spokesman Andre Riley said the child was an immigrant from Africa.

The fire department said in a news release that a battalion chief, a pumper truck and another truck were dispatched at 3:34 p.m. to a motor vehicle accident. Minutes later, crew aboard Pumper 10 told dispatchers that they had been involved in an injury accident just east of downtown.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released.

Kansas City police are investigating.

How tragic, not only for the child's family but for the firefighters and particularly the driver; my prayers to all involved.
If ever there was a need for CISD and EA then this call is it. I hope that all involved receive the care they need to deal with this tragedy and continue to do the good that they do everyday.
This is tragic. I am sure the firefighter feels awful. Where was an adult? This child was 7. I know I did not leave my 7 year olds out by themselves. I feel bad for that family but not knowing the full details it makes it hard to comment all together on this topic
Very well said Bev
So sad. My prayers go out to all involved.

Where was the adult Supervision? A 7 year old child shuld not be allowed any where near a street alone!
