Shawnee Fire Truck In Accident, Firefight In Hospital - 2/13/2009
A Shawnee fire truck is involved in an accident near Toledo this afternoon, sending one firefighter to the hospital.
Witnesses say a pickup truck ran a stop sign at US-20 and Lucky Road outside Perrysburg shortly after 2 pm.
The Shawnee ladder truck was unable to miss the pickup and rolled several times.
Shawnee Township Fire Department's public information officer John Norris says 48 year old Dick Oder, a veteran of the department of more than 24 years, was driving the ladder truck.
The driver of the pickup and Oder were life-flighted to Toledo area hospitals.
Oder was transported and has been admitted to the University of Toledo Hospital.
His condition is unknown.
The ladder truck was in Wood County for repairs.
Another township vehicle was following the fire truck but was not involved in the accident.
Norris says the truck is worth three quarters of a million dollars. Replacing it is a major concern for the department during these tough economic times and it had just been repaired.
Members of the Shawnee Fire Department say their thoughts and prayers are with the Oder family. They all hope he fully recovers soon.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Shawnee Fire department and the Oder family. I am from the area where the accident happened. I am not there, currently serving in Iraq. But I know the rescue personal did a great job and the staff at the University of Toledo Hospital will take great care of Mr. Oder.

What a tragedy for both the Oder Family and the Shawnee Fire Department. Lessons learned here of course is that defensive driving is imperative and sometimes it's just not worth rushing to an emergency scene, and not slowing down at ALL intersections, regardless whether they are controlled with lights or a stop sign. This incident involved a civilian that blew a stop sign. The question is will his insurance cover the damages to the fire truck and how bad was the firefighter hurt? These are the biggest losses for the department at this point.
We had a ladder truck that was involved in an accident and not only was there body work and frame damages but the ladders were compromised as well... They will have to be tested to ensure that they will be able to have the appropriate tensile strength for emergency responses. This should serve as a reminder for all of us to slow down and be cautious. To not do so can and is a disaster in itself.

Yowzers! That Ladder is FUBAR. I hope all involved have a speedy recovery. That's is most likely a couple hundred grand to fix, and many months out of service, if its not totalled.
