Hi everyone! I was wondering if there was anything I could do this summer to get ready for being a firefighter? I am 17 years old, and will be taking fire science and first response classes at a local college. Do you think I could volunteer at my local station? Or is there anything else I can do? Thanks for any help!

I am not sure what the age requirement is at your local station but I feel you should at least join and get your feet wet so to speak. Learn the basics and get a feel for how and why things are done. Be very attentive and pay attention. You will more than likely find that most firefighters are willing to teach/help those that show the interest and want to learn. Be safe and good luck.
I would go to you local department and see about volunteering it will give you some experience plus you will know if this is something you want to commit to because it is a job that takes alot of training, time, dedication, and time away from the family.

If you start out volunteering and find you like it then I say go for it because after the years I have in I still love doing this and would not trade it for the world.
I am not sure about your area but here we have a couple of dept.'s that do a "Fire Explorers" program which is aimed at people your age to give them the basics behind the fire service and basic "how to's". Might want to check some of the local dept.'s to see if anyone offers something.
Contact your local Department and see if they have something for you. Good Luck
