I was on line looking up some firefighting items and I came across this question and thought it was interesting. If you had to have only one image...one icon...to represent the fire service as a whole...what would it be? Dalmation? Leather helmet? American LaFrance? Brass pole? Maltese cross? Ahrens-Fox?? Others??
The only thing I can think of is a yellow flame with the universal red "no" circle. I don't know if there is an official one adopted by ISO but that would be about as universal as one could get.
Of course, people would have to 'splain what it meant to some of us old timers...
Wow wow, gentlemen.....Based on what I've read, we can make a list and then narrow it down. I hope this will help. In random order.
1. Maltese Cross - might be compromise because of some FFN members are from Europe who don't use Maltese Cross as a symbol. (North America thing). Brits and Australian use 8 pointed star instead.
2. Fire Truck silhoutte - some suggested seagrave model but not all fire trucks have seagrave, some KME, Pierce, Scania, Izusu - Hino Japanese etc. some converted vehicles. A generic silhoutte would be better.
3. St. Florian - patron saint of the fire service.
4. Axe and Ladder, pike pole or other tools - common tool in firefighting
5. Open Hand - symbolizing our main intention of helping other people.
6. Boots and turn-out gear - some say not all FD doesn't have turn outs. probable candidate.
7. A firefighter rescuing / coming out from a burning building.
8. helmet
anything that I missed...... : )
I think we might narrow it down to two major groups of people here. North America and Europe. What symbols or tools of the trade they use?
Once again Jenny, the 'star of life' is not an International emblem for medical aid. As the Maltese Cross is not an international emblem for firefighting. I've said it before, I don't think there CAN be an internationally accepted emblem. Not even a helmet - our's a similar to those that seem to be worn on the west coast of the USA, very different from your leather helmets, very different from the jet helmet style worn in much of Europe. No international style there...
Lutan? I don't think I'd even bother taking anything seriously from someone with a screen-name of "Kali Goddess of Destruction". Let alone discuss anything such as professionalism. I've never had a 'Chief', have you? The Chief Fire Officer of the CFA might come under that, but I'd never call him 'Chief' - I'd probably call him 'Russell', after all, he's only the boss of over 60,000 firefighters. I bet he has a sense of humour.
I took this thread as a bit of fun, but it isn't going anywhere. We're all too parochial. Let's just accept the Maltese Cross as being the international emblem - of Canada and the USA anyway.
Hands up those people who don't know that the rest of the world exists, and that it has many very old traditions and customs?
