I was on line looking up some firefighting items and I came across this question and thought it was interesting. If you had to have only one image...one icon...to represent the fire service as a whole...what would it be? Dalmation? Leather helmet? American LaFrance? Brass pole? Maltese cross? Ahrens-Fox?? Others??

I would choose the Firefighters Cross. Maltese is an inaccurate term. See current status of Firefighters Cross at http://my.fire.st/group/firefighterscrossproject
Aw man, I hate when they photoshop some other guy's face onto my body! LMAO
No body hair?
That's just creepy.

Mate, I'm more than willing to give people the benefit of the doubt! Did you notice, Lutan and I didn't start the mud-slinging... But we're willing to give a little back.

Geographically inspired names? No worries, even I know what you mean by WestPhilly!
Or a Vi-dalia...
Serious question Art - do you know of an accepted way of depicting Florian? He was a Roman General, so it cold be wearing either a toga or armour?
Here's an idea- how about a picture of a fire fighter extinguishing a fire?

Pretty much universal, I mean that's what fire fighters do.

You could blur the image slightly (And call it artistic) so then the uniform type is not recognizable as to where it comes from. The picture could be in black and white so then the uniform colour would also be a non issue. You could remove any company/department names so that's also not an issue.

I'd post a picture of my idea, but some might find it offensive and others might find it stupid....
Hey Luke

Post the image, we do stupid real good here while others can freely take a fence without having to think.
Also:

Blur the nozzle so we can't tell if it's a combo or smooth bore
Blur the hose so we can't tell what diameter it is... will that be a dry line or charged?
Leather helmet would be traditional, but not all departments issue them... better make that somewhat fuzzy...
Don't show the boots, to avoid the leather vs. rubber discussion...
What type of fire did you say was being extinguished?
The line of reality is being blurred here.
I was do for an eye exam anyway.
Good discussion, though.
Was this blurred image going to include a PPV fan?
A POV with lights and sirens?
TCSS.

I'll reply to my own post as for some reason there isn't a 'reply to this' showing on your last post for me WestPhilly. I can run with what you say, after all, you've been trying to extinguish the fire since the start! Good onya.
The image needs to be darkened, by about 75%. This would allow the blurry POV with lights to be taken as a police car for those of us who don't have lights or respond direct. And so much of our firefighting is done at night as well!

I think I'm beginning to see the picture, but I'm not sure because it's so dark and blurry...
