Pipin' Hot First Due..30 Minutes or Less

You're taking in Box 4527 for a reported structure fire at a vacant pizza shop. You have a number of reports coming in, reporting large volumes of smoke in the vicinity of the interstate. You have a two and one response along with the Battalion Chief on the initial alarm.

Upon your arrival, you observe the first due Engine Company has just arrived and is starting their 360.
Heavy smoke is evident along the Alpha side (A) and some fire from the Charlie side (C).
Traffic conditions along the highway (Alpha side (A) is heavy. The same is true along the parallel highway on the Charlie side (C). The hydrant was picked up by the first-due engine company as they approached the scene coming up from the Bravo direction of travel (300’ feet).

You are aware that this area has been prone to vandalism by area youths and you observe three bicycles laying in front of the building, BUT no kids around. A civilian who was driving by reports to you he observed one youth running at the same time he observed the smoke pouring out of the building. You transmit a working structure fire…..

What’s your incident action plan (IAP)?
What are your strategic considerations?
How do you expect the building to perform?
Is this building Vacant, Unoccupied, Occupied, Abandoned…?
What kinds of challenges do you have?
What are the safety issues?
What resources are needed?
What conflicting Risk Management Profiles do you have?

More importantly….how much time do you have to get mission critical assignments made and carried out?

Remember…thirty minutes or less, now get to work…

Chris, I'll go with your requested change of direction. That is, to comment on the last photo you posted.

So, I'm wondering what the hell red hat and yellow hat are doing so close to that wall? They are not doing any magic save of the building, all they are doing is adding a risk of severe injuries. Black hat is a little too close, his stream could be doing the same job from another couple of metres back - but red hat/yellow hat? They should be pulled way back. If that wall, which is bowing, with the weight of tthe fallen roof on it, falls then they are under it and injured. Safety Officer anyone?
Just curious, doesn't this sequence say "Training fire, unfought?"
Ben,

Based on your last response saying training fire left without fighting, there was an investigation into the cause of this fire and it was Arson. This happened in the Boca Raton area. The building being vacated and still owned by Pizza Hut meant this was a born loser from the start. I am not sure if they are self insured or not but there was little to gain from the fight process.
Just wondering...the photos didn't seem to show much of an extinguishment effort, not even defensively.
I realize that a few photos don't generally tell the whole story and just wondered if there was more to it or not.
Is this perhaps due to the level of liability the town was assuming with the amount of vandalism and homeless population? Knowing it was a vacant property that was nothing but problems may have contributed to the lax efforts.
As long as we don't get anyone hurt and protect the appropriate exposures...
I'm sorry man. I'm a volly and have never heard of a 2 and 1 response. I think I can guess like 2 engines and 1 truck???? Maybe???
since it is burnt i want mine free plus 6 more
You did order the pizza well done. Perhaps in the future you should specify the level of well done you want. :)
Well first due engine pull up the b side close to fence out of collapse zone pull 2.5 to side door hit what you can Have the 1st due ladder search with a TIC with due regaurd. Use the big line to hold off fire spread until we can search for the kids. Keep truck on the A/D corner may need it later. Have 2nd due engine hit a plug on the way in pull up the d side out of the collaspe zone 2.5 to the side hit what we can. I hit a second alarm and a rescue for RIT at least two engines and two trucks. Have 3rd engine feed the ladder prepare for out ops have second ladder set up on A/B corner get a supply from 1st engine. Have third truck to C/D corner set up areial get supply from 2nd due. Once search is done pull all line back open up ladder use ground master streams.
Common fire service term that indicates the alarm response assignment, typically the first number indicates the number of engine companies, the second, the number of truck/ladder companies. If you were to state; two, one and one, it would mean two engines, one truck and one rescue/squad company....
Ok. Thank you so much. Like I said that was new to me. Woo hoo!!!! I learned something today!!!
