i was just wondering if anyone had ever had a moment where the would want a different job. like when you couldn't save a little kid with cpr did you ever wish you had a desk job? your average 9-5? I guess this would be when the stress of the job got to you or something.
Jessica,I am a 56 year old Lieutenant with a Career Township Fire / EMS Dept. in Central Ohio. There have been days that I regret, days that we have lost an infant, worked like hell to get an accident victim out of a water laden lock in minus 6 degree weather only to lose him to cardiac arrest as we were pulling him out. One Christmas Eve I lost a 10 year old girl at 10:00 am and an 80 year old grandmother at 23:30 that evening. It's a tough profession.....and not for everyone. My only regret....is that I waited until I was 39 years old to change occupations.
I did for 11 years, gave up a job as an electrical engineer to do this. Can't say as I would like to go back to doing 9-5 again. I would like to live on a beach as a bum with my millions from the lottery winnings in the bank, but until that happens I think I will stick to this job.
My current job in its most basic form is boring, lacks any challanges, and I find myself taking online courses to get through the day. If things could of been different then I'd probably be a career fire fighter but it wasn't meant to be.
Yes I have thought about a different career. I work a 40 hour boring week job. No excitement no nothing I am currently trying to get a full time firefighting. Because I want a job that has MEANING. I want to feel like I have acomplished something at the end of the day whether that be a good day or a bad.
My "job" as in what pays the bills...? Yes, from time to time I do....But as for the "Volunteer job" No, never.....love it....wish I could start over....would do it all again but maybe even start earlier....Once it is in your blood you can't get enough...or you find out very early that it isn't for you at all and leave...(and I am an RN career wise).....Paul
