Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed the high level of incompetence shown, (especially where the young guys are concerned), in the arena of grammer? Dare I say spelling, but I am a lousy speller as well. Sister Virginia would kick my ass if she thought I was killing the English language the way these people do. As would most of the other teachers I've had, not to mention my mother! How does a person make it through life without the ability to communicate? I fear we as a society will be overrun by a culture of profesional communicators that can only say correctly, "Would you like to supersize that sir'? Am I just an idiot for noticing this or should I be happy that my son will grow up with the ability to speak and write? Or is that speek and rite?

Personally, I believe the low level of literacy amongst some of the FFN members explains the "Dive bomb" answers, the one-line answers and overall lack of discussion (vs. simple commenting).

Maybe along with seatbelt use, and Firefighter fitness, the Fire Service needs to make improving the literacy of our Firefighters a priority. No, it may not save their lives, but it is a problem. Especially, it seems among younger, 20-somethings, who are the next generation of company officers, trainers, grant writers and eventually chief officers.

I don't think being illiterate, at least not functionally illiterate, should keep one off of a volunteer firefighting force, but we should identify those who are and make sure they take remedial English classes. What is the PC term for a class which teaches grade school English to adults?

Simply put, it is difficult to discuss a subject when you have trouble stringing a complete sentence together in written form.

If we don't work on this problem now, someday Firefighting training mauals will be written in the same manner as the following gem.

"r fire department started a little fire acadimy in the summer ware the public comes and let them try the hose the gear and the scba on and have them got threw little simlation what a fire fighter would go threw..."

I know this is old, I know that in all likelihood this post won't be read by anyone else, but I don't care I must add my reply!

YES - "I could care less" - do they know what they're saying? As with a bumper sticker I saw a few years ago"
"If You Ain't a Vanner You Ain't Sh*t". Which means what? If you are, you are? I couldn't help but laugh at the poor ignorant guy driving the car (yes, it WAS a van).

PS I used the '*' instead of an 'i' just in case of site censorship...
OUCH - that last paragraph Greenman!

How about the concept that 'literacy relates to communication'. If you can't spell, how do you respond to a "could you spell that please?" request over the radio?

Now, I'll admit to lazyness. I haven't read through this entire thread. So apologies if this has been mentioned earlier. There; their; they're. Is it really so hard to choose the correct word? Let's face it, 'they're' is really two words, not hard!
"I could care less" is an evolution of the phrase "as if I could care less."

That's how idioms happen... speakers contract, rearrange, or use in unexpected ways older expressions, so that their apparent meaning is quite different than their actual meaning.

sorry, but i take offence that you would be brazen enough to post something like this,,,we are not all excellent typests or spellers...we do the best we can, and if you cant handle it..dont bother reading what is posted..you come across as someone who would resent a person with scars or was crippled...i really feel sorry for you
Don't take it so personally.
The crux of the matter is this: taking the time to learn the correct spelling of a word if you are writing or taking the time to learn the correct pronunciation of a word if you are speaking is indicative of a person who wants to communicate EFFECTIVELY. Or would you rather that the person on the receiving end is constantly asking "what do they mean?" or "what did they say?" or "did I understand them correctly?"
Learning spelling, grammar and correct pronunciation shouldn't be offensive. It should be recognized as strength of character.
No offense.

Hey, Mr. Smarty Pants:
Let's start a thread about words that end in the letter "x".
I'll start.
Sphinx.
I TOTTALLY agree! The reasons are many for the lack in spelling or grammer skills. But its one thing to abbreviate words like you-u and are-r, but when a guy asks a question and spells mean- meen, then thats annoying. No one is asking you to spell holoprosencephaly guys!! (and girls!!) but come on the easy words DAMN!
TAKE IT FROM ME GUYS...
ALL GIRLS THINK STUPIDITY, AKA MISSPELLING & BAD GRAMMER, IS A BIG TURN-OFF!!!!
Thanks JIM for bringing this up, I'm new here and I hope all the guys that just added me won't go delete me now! If they do o-well i guess. (There is an example of abbreviations that r OK :)
