did you ever wish you had a different job?
i was just wondering if anyone had ever had a moment where the would want a different job. like when you couldn't save a little kid with cpr did you ever wish you had a desk job? your average 9-5? I guess this would be when the stress of the job got to you or something.

The only other thing I would want to do is a ranger at a national park. But I never got too serious about anything but fgirefighting. You can't buy a job like we have.

I always wanted to be the all-time record holder for Power Ball winnings. Until that happens, I'll stick to my career firefighter-paramedic job.
I was also going to be a rock star until my complete lack of talent, charisma, and musical ability was noticed by...everyone that heard me sing or try to play an instrument.

After 27 year doing what I do I dont know that I could ever say I would rather be doing something else. I am sure there are those moments when I was disappointed with circumstances but have to say the love of the job is still there. I would give up the BS of dealing with budgets and Councils in a moment however. Never ever get tired of the feelings you feel when you've done the job and know that you made a difference in someone's life. Dosnt matter if they ever even say a word of thanks. You know you did the job.

Joe, you are just as good, maybe sometimes better. You do it for the love of what you do without a paycheck. Been on both sides of the fence. You deserve just as much praise.

I gave up a job where I made over twice what I do now, just to be in emergency services. I love what I do, and don't think I would change it now. I turn 31 this year, and my only regret is that I didn't get started a little earlier. If I had I would definately be testing for more carreer departments, but at my age I am just about to old to get hired due to no military time for civil service jobs. I am the guy on the other end of the radio that you all yell at when I wake you up at 3am, but I understand I used to cuss the dispatcher too.

I wouldn't trade it for the world!! I wanted tp be either a cop or fireman, The FD called first and have loved it ever since, until I was injured and then forced to retire. But I am still a life member at my volly house so I will always be a thorn in somebodys side!! HAHA!! I am going to get my injuries fixed and then probably become a Fire Investigator somewhere!! Its both the FD & the PD in one!

Michael - Like you I have been on the job since the dark ages of tail boards and hip boots!
I unlike you left the fire service after 15 years on the job, and after 4.5 years came back home to the brotherhood. I cant imagine anything that gives me the sense of pride that the fire service gives me.
As for the teacher comment below...boom boom you have lost your mind. Was married to a teacher for 10 years and there is no job more important or heavy than teaching young minds.

I guess some would say I have the best of both worlds right now being a vollie and working in finance, but to be honest... I would drop my desk job in a heartbeat if I could land a job a goodpaying job as a career firefighter here. I'm ex-military and have seen the worst this world has to offer. Not being able to save a life from time to time is tough, but having to take one is by far worse, but in today's world as a soldier, it's obviously necessary.
Being a firefighter offers you the opportunity to play your part in serving your country, your community and your family without doubting whether or not your doing the right thing from time to time. There will be a time when your emotions get the best of you and you may doubt whether you're fast enough or good enough, but you never doubt what you're there for... you save lives. You do a job not everyone can do nor can they understand.
When I served in my regiment there was a phrase we were told by George Orwell that still rings true today:
"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."
I think the same is true about firefighters... not many people could understand the full complexity of this job, but you do otherwise you wouldn't have chosen to don that turnout gear and run towards a burning building while everyone else runs away.
So no... to me this is the best job people like us could ever wish for. Stress comes with the territory, but we're made for it.
