Ok first off I am not bashing law enforcement I have lots of respect for those guys but here is the situation. I was at home listening to the pager and a Dept. close to us was dispatched out to the interstate for chest pain. Thier jurisdiction borders Nebraska but the interstate is atleast 4 miles in to Iowa. Well the patient called 911 from his cell phone, the call went to Nebraska who transfered it to our dispatch. For some reason a Trooper from Nebraska entered into Iowa, located the patient and then cancelled the ambulance and transported the patient to a Nebraska hospital which was about 15 minutes further than the hospital that the responding dept. normally transports to. here is some geography for you, interstate 680 enters Iowa and connects to i 29 about 4 miles into Iowa. the patient was located at the 63 mile marker of i 29 south bound. The 63 mile marker is 3 miles north of i 680. So in all a Nebraska trooper entered 7 miles into Iowa where he has no jurisdiction and cancelled an ambulance and transported the patient himself. the responding Dept was enroute and only three miles away from the scene when the trooper cancelled them. What are your thoughts on this?

you hear of this happening all the time police responding and decideing we are not needed they are not trained for what we are he was being nice and trying to help but thats as far as it should have gone he was out of state was he even allowed by law to be there and to disregard the ambulance if something had happened to the guy who would have gotten the blame the ambulance the cop and which state
I don’t have a problem with the jurisdiction thing; I will guess this happens all the time in this location. Patient transport with only 1 is against every SOG, SOP, and law on the books, let alone by an officer with maybe first aid training. You need to nip this in the butt quick, well I guess it was not your call anyways. This coming from 2 different states, 2 different jurisdictions, was the whole story known to the hospital he transported to, probably not, but needs to be.
Whomever is the ambulance's medical director needs to get this, review it and then take it to the next level.
I would bet that, not only was this a violation of the ambulance transport protocols, but also the state trooper's protocols. I realize that Andy of Mayberry used to take the police car to the fishin' hole, but we are talking about turning a squad car into an ambulance.
This one worked out in the end, because no one died. But, sheesh; it is so bizarre that it needs a thorough review.
Don't quit.

I'm totally in agreement with you there Luke, no need for me to be careful. I too know of Brigades cancelling a rescue appliance - whether it be SES or CFA! - and that is wrong. I know one CFA RAR Brigade that has been wrongly cancelled in the past, so their SOP now is to continue to the scene (downgrading to Code 3 for their own safety) and assess the situation/talk to the ambos themselves. I've heard one of our career people cancel an SES rescue because the vehicle concerned was a truck - he called for an MFB heavy rescue to be responded, which took much longer to arrive. Wrong call.

We shouuld all only make calls for which we are qualified. I for one will happily let everyone come on, if they aren't really needed then they can go home, with my thanks!
Thanks for all the constructive replies guys! I also posted this in another firefighting forum just to see differences in opinions and I was bashed by most of the members that replied to it. I am really good friends with most of the guys on the department this post concerns and I have spoken to them about the incident. They were in the process of finding out who the trooper was and trying to get contact info for his supervisor. Like I said before I am not bashing the trooper and I am sure he only had best intentions in mind and I dont know the whole situation because I wasnt there I only know what was being relayed between the trooper and the ambulance but I think this should have gone differently.
