Employment with a felony? (Thank you everyone who helped me, I appreciate it very much)

First I would like to thank anyone and everyone who responds to this message. When I was 19 back in 1999 I was arrested for unlawful possesion of drug paraphenalia and possesion of a controlled substance. To make a long story short I was driving with "friends" when I was pulled over for speeding, my "friends" hid their contraband in my car without my knowledge and since it was in my car and they denied owning the above mentioned articles, I was arrested and charged. It has been 10 years since then and now that I know I want to become a firefighter I am afraid that this will keep me from obtaining my dream...so I guess my question is, am I screwed? Should I just try and forget about becoming a fireman? What if I can get this felony expunged? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and God bless

Nick....I know you are catching shit....you had to expect some of that with this post.....Hell man you don't hang out your bed sheets if you don't want people to know you piss the bed.....Suck it up....do your research and go from there......Paul
Scott, I am not a "convict." Haha...A convict is a person who is convicted of a crime and then sentenced to a custodial term (No Scott, I do not mean a janitor.) Once again, I do not want your pitty or your sorrows, I have made a fantastic life for myself, I was only looking for some insight into following a dream. I would appreciate it greatly if you could please leave this forum open to people with some valuable advice. Stay safe.
Hey Paul, Yeah I knew I would get one of these guys on here, it's a small price to pay for some great advice from people like yourself. I actually never thought of calling the D.A. Excellent idea! Thank you so much!
Yes, Nick you ARE a convict....For the record anyone found guilty of a felony (convicted of a crime) is considered a convict....just because you got probation/fined makes no difference at all....You don't have to do time in the Correctional Facility to make that defination.....Same goes for DWI...That here in NY is now a felony as well.....Paul
I do not mind your posts one bit, I actually find them ammusing. Its just your accusations of my using drugs that gets to me. I have never in my life used any drug, not even marijuana. I have heard your opinions and I thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to post. Thanks again.
Post Full name and State....I will find it.....I work for the NY State Dept of Corrections now.....
Hey Paul, Do you have an email? I can send you that info, just would prefer to not post it on a forum board, never know what kind of psychos are on here.
Go to my page and send a message.....BUT....Make sure you want the answer before you do.....I don't fluff and buff or make things nice and shiny....tha's just not me.....Paul
You are a good man Paul, I have an appointment with a lawyer tomorrow morning and might as well stop by the court house to see what my file says as well. Let me see what I can dig up myself before giving out my info. I really do appreciate your help Paul.
Hey, Scott:
You got some anger, man.
Nick makes it abundantly clear that he screwed up by giving this group of "friends" a ride.
He has made it ever so clear that he paid the price.
It is YOUR opinion that he should not be allowed into public service.
Now; here is where you and I disagree.
Whether you know it or not or accept it or not; the fire service is FULL of felons.
And the reason is that 85% of the fire departments DON'T run background checks.
You might THINK you know the people that you are serving with, but do you? Really?
Some people have a problem with drug offenses, but don't have a problem with aggravated battery or a DUI or petty theft or other property crimes.
But, establishing the entry level is left to every fire department, unless they are federal.
Regardless, you are making this discussion way too personal.
You don't have to cut him slack, but you don't have to kick him in the nads, neither.
Nick; check back when you have talked to an attorney.
TCSS.

Thank you Chief, and Scott I never said I wanted to run with your company, I really do appreciate your insights but the way you are conducting yourself is appauling and extremely immature. You are 40 years old, If this is your opinion, state it and move on. There was no need to accuse me of such things. And even though you are obviously a head case, and basically told me I will never get any job even though I am a college graduate, I hold no resentment toward you and wish you nothing but the best.
There was no name calling Scott, I simply stated what I have seen in your posts on my thread. It's ok, I'm not mad at you at all. You have a right to your opinion, but to call me a liar and a drug user when i have nothing to gain by lying is downright immature and clearly an uneducated response. After all your drama I still can wish you nothing but the best.
