Employment with a felony? (Thank you everyone who helped me, I appreciate it very much)
First I would like to thank anyone and everyone who responds to this message. When I was 19 back in 1999 I was arrested for unlawful possesion of drug paraphenalia and possesion of a controlled substance. To make a long story short I was driving with "friends" when I was pulled over for speeding, my "friends" hid their contraband in my car without my knowledge and since it was in my car and they denied owning the above mentioned articles, I was arrested and charged. It has been 10 years since then and now that I know I want to become a firefighter I am afraid that this will keep me from obtaining my dream...so I guess my question is, am I screwed? Should I just try and forget about becoming a fireman? What if I can get this felony expunged? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No, I did not go to jail. I had probation for 2 years, fines and drug tests, which I passed every one because I HAVE NEVER used drugs.

Scott, I appreciate your honesty, but you are overstepping your boundaries. No, I was unaware they were into drugs seeing as how I have never been into that scene and everyone who knows me has always known I am against drugs. After that night, they were dealt with accordingly and I have never seen nor spoken to them again. If you would like to beleive otherwise, please do because if I had been using drugs, I doubt I would have graduated college with the honors that I have.

If I had known they were into drugs, why would I be on a forum telling you I did not? You don't know me at all, so your judgemental comments are out of line, and there would be no difference if I just came out and told you that I believe you are a child molester or a murderer. Like I said, I thank you for your insight into my question.

I think you are misunderstanding me, Scott. When I said "friends" I do not mean people I hung around on a regular basis. I had, and still maintain, a variety of different groups of friends. Maybe you took it as these were my only friends and I would know what they were into???? But I do appreciate your openess and your belief that I am a crackhead. Scott, i fear this conversation is heading in the wrong direction. I would never want you to feel sorry for me, I have a degree in Architecture so I am fine as far as employment. I'm sorry if you are having a bad day or if this is just the type of person you are. I was only looking for some insight into my question, not for someone to accuse me of being a drug addict. What one believes is not the issue....No-one was "convicted" (that is found guility by a court of law) of child molestation...But someone was convicted of drug possession....You were convicted correct....? And what punishment were you given...other that having a felony on your record......? Paul

Hey Paul, I was given probation, fines and drug testing which I obviously passed on a weekly basis. I completed everything in good standing but am not sure what deal my lawyer had with the court. It could have been agreed upon to be stricken from my record after a period of time with no further charges, I am just not sure, as this was 10 years ago. I have heard some people say I could be ok and others (ahem) saying I am screwed and a bad person. I hope it works out, i could be a great asset to a FD. I'll keep you posted.

And were you granted your license for this..? Did you disclose your history before taking your test..?? I hope so...failure to disclose can lead to loss of it.....

Easy to find out....Call your local D.A. or Sherriff and ask....it is a matter of public record....if fact you can find it through the internet if you tried....its all there...for the world to see....

Scott, you should re-read my comment. I did not say they were not my friends. I simply stated that I had multiple groups of friends, some of whom i hung out with regularly and some who I hung out with occasionaly. I created this thread to gain some information on my situation. I would appreciate it if you could not fill it with your accusations. Thank you for your time and advice.
