I wanna know the sista-hood does to keep in shape. In all of the incident reports I've read on the NIOSH site- it saddens me to see so many deaths being health related. It will be interesting to read the reports in the next ten years with the increase of women in the fire service. It's fabulous that so many keep safety in mind when fighting fires- Everyone goes Home... BUT- what about the personal responsibility and the responsibility we have to those we work with when it comes to our health?
I want to know what YOU all do to keep your SELF safe, and healthy.
I don't know what state you live in but I can tell you that down here in the south it is pretty embarrassing seeing how overweight and obese the majority of our FF's & EMT's are. I work out 4-5 days a week and try to do cardio at least that many days a week. I also try to cook pretty healthy meals here in hopes it will rub off on crew. I have to work out to do be able to do my job I don't see how people that are truely out of shape can function and be productive team members in our line of work. I think many of us need to focus more on our health so we can enjoy long careers and retirement.
I totally agree with the pole dancing. I also like using the weight bench at the station. To add alittle extra to the everyday tasks around the station I put my air pack on. I also will utilize some of the tools as weights.
I boxing, kickboxing and do mixed martial arts four times a week and kettlebell lifting three times a week. I also eat as healthy as one can being a member of the volunteer fire service.

I currently meet with a high intensity trainer 3 times a week (surprisingly not as expensive as I thought it would be) and I try to drag my booty to the gym 2-3 times a week for cardio. So far I have dropped 4" off my waist and 30lbs. We are also trying to get a district wide "biggest loser" competition going, in response to the increase in LODD due to health.
