I was on line looking up some firefighting items and I came across this question and thought it was interesting. If you had to have only one image...one icon...to represent the fire service as a whole...what would it be? Dalmation? Leather helmet? American LaFrance? Brass pole? Maltese cross? Ahrens-Fox?? Others??

I wasn't going to go there Damnthing, religion can be such a touchy subject, but I'd thought the same thing. The 'line' is drawn in so many different places by so many different people.
ABSOLUTELY...the maltese cross
Another twist on this Damnthing (and damn, I'm getting involved in a religious discussion!) to call the image of Kali something from mythology might also be an insult to a devout Hindu. One definition of the word myth is "made up story or tale". Can anyone provide proof that Kali is 'made up'? And I mean proof, not anything taken from any other religious teaching. Proof.

In my own circle of family and friends we've been known to talk about the mythology behind the Christian faith (note I capitalise the word?), because that's the way we think. But I wouldn't dream of taking a hard line about it with a devout Christian. They are entitled and welcome to their faith.

In my opinion, use of a religious icon, and the name of a deity for the purposes we are talking about, are forms of disrespect. And I have NO religious beliefs. I don't currently have any Hindu friends. I have had, but people can move apart. Would my old friends be insulted? I don't know, but they might be.

Back to what started all this. Yesterday I showed Lutan's first picture to my daughter-in-law. A very professional person; ex Navy officer, multiple University Degrees, a highly qualified accountant. And also a very straight-laced person. She laughed. She also liked another of Lutan's pics, the one of the bare-chested man holding a baby, thought he was maybe a little overdeveloped, but still well worth looking at. Bugger me, a non-FF member of the public who wasn't offended by Lutans joke! We may as well stop here Damnthing, this will only get nastier.
Do you mean the original Maltese Cross? The one that is still used by the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem? The one that this description fits:
The Maltese cross or Amalfi cross is identified as the symbol of an order of Christian warriors known as the Knights Hospitaller or Knights of Malta. It was originally the symbol of Amalfi, a small Italian republic of the 11th century. The cross is eight-pointed and has the form of four "V"-shaped arms joined together at their tips, so that each arm has two points. Its design is based on crosses used since the First Crusade. The eight points are said to symbolise the eight points of courage.
The one used by the country of Malta?

Or do you mean the cross used by firefighters in North America? Which bears very little resemblance to the Maltese Cross.

I think I was right a long time ago in this thread. There will probably never be international agreement to the idea of a sngle emblem to denote firefighters. And I'll also say again, hold onto your firefighters cross, it means a lot to a lot of people in North America, and it's an honourable symbol. But it's not international, so it can't be the one emblem for all firefighters...
Ah, but we only used the M-16 as a secondary weapon in Vietnam. We mostly used a Belgian designed 7.62 with greater stopping power. We did use M113A1's a lot, how about them?

I'll say it for you - "Stop it Tony!"
I think you people are being silly and are making fun of a very serious topic....! :)
first off this whole thing is retarded we're supposed to be a family kali uses a hindu image and lutan used an image of his choice we should be able to joke women every where have pictures of half naked firemen but since it's a half naked woman oh sound the alarm my 2 cents stay safe god bless
Who, me? I take this very seriously. You know me, always serious. I wouldn't know a joke from a jerk.

I admit that until this thread started, I had no idea about how different to the Maltese Cross the American firefighters cross was! No idea at all. Had never even thought about it. Sheer ignorance on my part, but I've got over that now.

If the North Americans want to call their cross a Maltese Cross I don't suppose anyone will be able to stop them. No matter how unlike the Maltese Cross it is. I wonder if many people in Malta would be offended by this misuse of the name of their national symbol? I wonder how many people didn't even know that Malta is a country?
It is? Is that where malted milk balls are made? And that "malt" stuff they use to make beer?
Put a fire hat on the goddam EveryReady bunny and call it quits.
I remember in the 70s that their were necklaces that had maltese crosses and they were a fashion accessory.
It didn't dawn on me until Thomas Bishop brought up that I had used the term to describe the fire service cross.
My bad, but now that I know, I won't make the mistake again.
I only know that I have a MEDALLION around my neck that includes St. Florian and it has only been off of me for surgery!
Otherwise, it is never without me.
To each his/her own.
If I say that I wasn't disrespectful and apologize to those who think that I was, then that should be the end of it.
To do otherwise is accusing someone of being dishonest and to me, that is also being disrespectful.
Keep this discussion philosophical. Don't let it get personal.
TCSS.

I'm with you all the way on that one, Art! I've had mine 14 years and it's only been off my body once. Stay safe!
