I got a DUI a few years back. I was just wondering if that would prevent me from getting a job as a firefighter. I plan on joining the Air National Guard for Fire Fighting, so I'll have good training, and I planned on going to school for Fire Science as well. So would the DUI hurt me still? Thanks for any help.
Hopefully that DUI taught you a lesson and it's only valuable if you learned. You admitting it is a step toward future prevention. Most employers, especially military and other government agencies, frown on DUI convictions and won't enlist or hire you. Security clearances are becoming a requirement for military personnel and as far as I know a DUI will prevent you from acquiring one. Employment/enlistment background checks are going to reveal it so ask a military recruiter or maybe an attorney what to do. Good luck. TCSS
Hay Tom, if you have a department in mind I would say go talk to their chief and see what his/her thoughts are. Some departments can and do look past such things others can not. I would think that as long as this was your first and only offence the majority of departments would not have a problem with it. The feel I get from other discussions here is that most do have a zero tollerance once you have joined. Not that you would have to go dry but if you have had anything to drink and the pager goes off don't bother showing up because you will be sent home.
hope this helps
