Not sure on the latest news, but I know if you search there is another topic about this with a lot of posts in it.

Thanks, TJ
Haven't heard a thing about it. You can go to this web site and search the current proposals by the State Assembly and Senate:

http://public.leginfo.state.ny.us/menugetf.cgi

I saw no bills proposing any light change. (Why would they?) They are considering making criminal background checks for all NYS FFs mandatory, however.
I never knew that NY does not do that already, I'd think they would since their a BIG city, well I think they should do background checks on everyone, we do it here. Thanks Joe
NY is more than just a big city. Its a WHOLE state...sorry i just had to say it

I don't believe that volunteers are goin red lights because what would be the point...

Chiefs have redlights and firetrucks have red lights. Thats it

Otherwise volly's have blue courtesy lights
It would be a huge mistake to let the volunteers use red lights. I came from NY state not the city. And there is so much blue light abuse by some vollies now with blue lights, that I can't imagine what they'd be like if they had the use of red lights. Red lights are for apparatus and chiefs and that should be it.
The only light change in NYS is allowing the Police Department to utilize a rear facing blue light since studies show that blue is a more visible light at night and in fog. In doing this the rate of accidents involving PD units on vehicle traffic stops has decreased since the law change was imposed last year.

NYS mandates that fire departments are to do a Mandatory Arson Background check on all new applicants to a Volly Department ( afree service provided by the county sheriffs office). All the city fire departments do criminal Background checks on their new hires and it is up to the volly departments if they want to do the full criminal background check on new applicants, but the cost of it usually $100 or more needs to be paid by the department or the applicant, so most departments do not do it.
Just attended a class by the Troopers and there isn't anything in the rumor mill about lights going RED...for vollies it is still BLUE lights...Paul
OUR FIRE INSTRUCTOR IN NY TOLD US WE MIGHT BE CHANGING TO BROWN, CAUSE EMERGENCY TRUCKS WANT BLUE WITH RED CAUSE IT'S MORE VISABLE.WE NOW RUN RED AND YELLOW ON BACK OF ALL OUR TRUCKS. THEY SAID YELLOW IS MORE VISABLE AT NIGHT.
Sorry I haven't read anything about it.
i havent heard anything about a light color change but i am on a dept that does background checks on all new members before we can have a key fob for the station
If theystate legislature is going to do anything, they will remove the blue light from the volunteer fire service completely. It is one of the most abused privaliges we have been given. We were warned time and time again to clean up our act, and we thumbed our nose to albany, so finally the New York State police got thier wish for the use of the blue light, by proving and showing pictures of the abuse,And we still havent cleaned up our act. The Volunteer fire service deserves to loose it, we don't even take care of the issue when they tell us to. At the state volunteer firemens association meeting someone was complaining of the police getting use of the blue light, and someone else pointed out to the chair thier were approximitly 31 vehicles in the parking lot of that meeting with illegal lights or configurations on their vehicles.
yes, no joke brown. He's a NYS fire instructor & investigator, he herd it from the higher up's, but he said it will take some time to change.
