Medic's carrying a pistol????

I know down by Detroit there are medic's carrying pistols for protection and even bullet proof jackets, but does anyone else know of city's that are doing the same thing or even fire departments that have some sort of protection like a bullet proof jacket. this seems to be a growing concern out there for everyone, just wanted to see your view on this issue.

I recently read that in Sydney and Melborne Australia, that the goverment has mandated that any Medic who wishes to take on learning of a martial art (Any of the bizzilions of them) that the goverment will pay 125% of the costs of the classes, and pay for the time off that they would be working to attend class. Now.. this I would agree with, Body Armor, I can agree with, But Medics & Fireman carring Firearms, are down right NOT AN OPTION.

Let's see... put on body armor... then turnout coat... then reflective vest...

Is there any chance we can get body armor in the new reflective vest color scheme so we can kill two birds with one shot, er stone?

I here you Brent, I'm from Northern Michigan and I've got a CCW, and if I feel I need to wear it then "I WILL DO JUST THAT!!! I'm sorry if that affents people but it is our right.

Wow I must say that this topic has gone through the roof, we dont need to get into a heated battle of whats right or wrong about each other, I was just looking to see if anyone knew of another ems crew or department that was carrying heat.

I think where you live makes a big difference on your opition. I don't think I would be expected to carry a gun if in the town I lived in there were 3500 people and the average house cost $350,000. It maybe I also have more training than the usuall CCW and its been burned it my mind. I will always carry even after someone tells me not to. I'm sure there are people out there that will sue me for saving their life if I choose to kill....I mean fire at their attacker. They won't get much.

Andrew,

Firearms very definately are an offensive weapon. You said so yourself at the end of your post..."Offensive is when you draw the weapon prior to being faced with mortal danger." If you can kill someone with a weapon or use it offensively, then it's an offensive weapon.

Now try to kill someone with the body armor you're wearing...kind of difficult to do, because it's defensive, but it's not a weapon. ALL weapons can be used offensively, by any user, including police officers.

I'm not ascribing any bad intent to you or any other police officer here, just cutting through the semantics.
Weapons = Offensive
Armor = Purely Defensive

Although I dont agree with carrying guns. I will say that around holloween we will carry. Our district is extremely rough around this time. The only person that is armed is the driver his job is to stand there and watch. We heve permission from the sherrif and many of us are "reserve deputies". Its not the best idea but for the time its all we can do. If manpower allows we have a deputy respond with us and our gun stays at the station.

Did I say I wanted to wear a pistol on my side, NO that was not the question!!! If I did I surely would not carry it in the open, it would be concealed, I've got a ccw and I'm sure thats what their doing too. I work very close with a local Public Safety department and of coarse they've got their pistols on the outside of them and they do patient care with the pistol there. You just need to pay attention when your in a position like that.
