Means of egress doors shall be readily distinguishable from the adjacent construction and finishes such that the doors are easily recognizable as doors. Mirrors or similar reflecting materials shall not be used on means of egress doors. Means of egress doors shall not be concealed by curtains, drapes, decorations or similar materials.
Also, the 2000 edition of the Life Safety Code, section 7.1.10.2.1 would address this issue. Also, section 7.5.2.2 of this code, NFPA 101.
Is it not wonderful that the code gods give us so much to work with. It would be equally nice if the legislators would give us a little more teeth. But that's another subject.
Yes, the SC legislature and the US legislature both need to stop tinkering with the codes and give us the authority we need to do our jobs without bureaucrats interfering on behalf of a few people who don't like what the code states. These bureaucrats would allow hazardous conditions that are contrary to the code just to appease a handful of people. Get politics out of code enforcement!
