I am looking for any information regarding the use of firefighters in conducting annual fire inspections. Our department is considering using the firefighters to conduct the fire inspections in addition to the full-time fire inspectors we have. I am just wondering how it works in any other location. Any iinformation would be appreciated.
Mike - I'm new to the group so sorry for the late reply. We have a lot of towns that do the inspections with the Firefighters. There was some initial gripes from some. Most towns set a positive note and show that by getting the guys in the buildings it helps with knowing the layout should there be a problem. We used a three part carbonless copy sheet with the common violations. The initial copy went to fire prevention for checks and balances to make sure crews were doing it on time.Second copy to the owner of the store or occupant.Third to the crew kept for follow up visits. We also held a two week long class on the common violations and what was to be expected. If we had failure of compliance within two return visits we turned this matter over to the fire prevention crews for follow up and tickets. The true test of the program comes when you have the completion of the second year and you check to the first year and see how many more problems were found. Some crews do a good job and the others well need some motivation. A lot of the larger towns found that this also was a great time to get some preplans done.
