My first chief told me and a few other newbies once after the station had a really big structure fire call we were all standing there just goin nuts about how great a fire call it was and he replied this............A good fire is a dead fire.... A bad fire is a dead firefighter!!!
back in the 50's i had a fire instructor teaching ventilation...his base statement was...put your ass to the wind and open up on the belly side....i have never forgotten that.

i remeber one phrase my captain told me everytime before we would leave the station it was when we would go crazy over that working structure fire come over the radio...."Dont kill yourself tryin to get to the fire,we dont want to cause an accident ourselves, remember we arent the ones who set it we're just there to put it out"
In my emt class...alot of people were worrying about CPR and breaking things and stuff...my instructors famous words are..."They're dead..you can't hurt them anymore" another one was "they're dead. you can't make them more dead. our job is to make them undead"
I work in EMS as and EMT but my husband is a firefighter. Last year he was down in San Diego CA for the big fall firestorm and there was a picture of his Cal-Fire engine in front of a wall of fire in the LA Times and all over the internet, which kinda freaked me out. When I finally got to talk to him three days later, he said: "Well, that is what we do, yes." I'll never forget that.
Also: "In EMT class, they never tell you about the roll-over where the guy has 12 cats, three rabbit cages, a couple of chickens, a parakeet, and two dogs in his car. Seriously, they can't prepare you for 12 pissed off terrified cats in a MVA."
