Fire science is probally one of the easiest degrees to get. That being said if tyou wish to stand out get a degree in something else. Emergency management is also another flooded degree market, to avoid
If you want to get hired by a fire based EMS service, then I would suggest getting your degree in Paramedicine and get the minimum fire certifications like FF1 and 2 along the way.

You can often go back (on the FD dime) and get your Fire Science degree using the gen eds, core credits from the Paramedic degree while on the job. At least around here, if a kid walks in with a degree in Paramedicine, he is pushed to the top of the list. Hard to train firefighters already on the job to become paramedics because of the cost, lost time on the floor and expense of covering his/her shifts.

It can be done but it is harder and cost more than taking a few firefighter classes. I have a guy on my group who I might have seen twice in the last six months because of clinicals... I ask him (when I see him) if he still works here.
