Hey im new here, just wanted to see what helmets people are using and what they think of them. Our vol. dept just got a grant for 25 full new sets of turn out gear, we were glad to hear last night that we will more than likely get leather boots. several of us though would like to get traditional style helmets. The catch though, is all 25 have to be the same, we cant each pick out one, so we all have to agree on one, meaning the cost of leather is way out of question, and i would not be surprised if we got the cheapest ones we found (again). One that I looked at a liked was the Ben franklin II plus, it has EZ flips that are NFPA approved, are these the same as bourkes?

I had the 1010 before my leather and it was a good comfortable helment.
hee hee...good one.
I'm on a volunteer department in Kentucky and we have cairns 1010.
Ok sounds like the cairns 1010 and 1044 are pretty popular. are they cheaper than the ben 2 plus? I haven't seen either of these in person, but the ben 2 just looks a little hight quality to me, might just be because of the eagle. Also CFD im curious how many of those helmets have the bourkes, or ez flips as tehy call them, and how does everyone like the flips. I think thats the main reason I am attracted to the ben 2's the bourkes just seem more practical to me than a sheild or goggles. And can anyone else verify that what I have read is correct, that morning pride is the only company whose bourkes are NFPA cretified?
Have you checked out the "Defender" shields..? Pretty cool systen and NFPA approved....the shield retracts inside of the helmet shell when not in use..very easy to deploy and works quite well......Stay safe.........Paul
Yes i have, those defender sheilds are slick as ice, I love that idea. I dont wear glasses, but several guys on my dept. do, and they say the defenders dont leave room for glasses, but then, all those guys leave their glasses on the truck when they have to put on SCBA's anyway so I guess they would be used to that.
ive got a bullard fire dome 2 with the fh-310 shiled thats what works for me. stay safe
I have the FDNY spec Ben II plus with the easy flips and love it. For the most part they run around $150 or so(regular model is just a different ear flap). I love the harness inside the helmet. It is fully padded all around and easly adjustable. Many of the guys on my department have them. I actually bought another just incase i decide to join another department some day. As far as I can tell, the only advantage of the Ben II over the Cairns is the Ben II's inner webing is all padded where the Cairns is not. But both are excellent helmets.
Well our dept. is stuck on buying Cairn hats, and enough people like the Defender sheilds that we will be getting on eof the 2 models offered with those. Fine with me, in just glad we are not getting 1) worthless big bulky facesheilds, and 2) ugly "urban" backwards hardhat looking ones. There was a Paul Conway traditional with goggles at the station for everyone to look at last week, I thought it looked kind of cheap though.
If you are looking at the defenders, then you are only able to choose the 1010 or the 1044. The 1044 being less expensive.
Do you know what is different about these 2 helmets? they look the same and have the same description on the website. Are they sized differently?
I believe the 1010 has the color all the way through and is a little heavier. The 1044 also has a lower profile from what I remember. I just became a dealer and have not gotten all of the catalogs yet.
