this is easy for my department if it does NOT pass our yearly test and cant be fixed its gone and I mean not placed in the back of the hall, where it might have a chance getting back onto the truck, its discarded:)
If any length of hose fails the pressure test and cannot be repaired, it is discarded and replaced with a new length. I'm not sure what the actual life span of a length of hose is.
Hey Greg, Every station has a full hose compliment on the engines and an equal amount on the racks... The hose is kept in service until it shows too much wear or fails... not that we don't buy new hose each year, it's just difficult to give any up when it comes time for re-racking the hose and doing the annual hose testing. Also, everyone tests roughly the same amount of hose to make it fair on everyone. The biggest milestone we made some years back now was training a couple of our guys how to use heavy duty sewing machines and they were making our own nylon webbing with plastic heavy duty buckles to secure our hose when constructing progressive hose lay packs for wildland evolutions. Down the road here, I want to put something together that demonstrates both how to construct these hose packs. Once you use them, you will be a believer...
it leaks or fails the hose test. we kept a couple of 1.5 hoses for training for busted hose drills but other than that we cut off the couplings and discard. I had four broke ribs for the lack of hose testing at a dept. so please test and discard
