Rescue-Extrication Gloves
Hello-
Does anyone have a favorite kind of rescue-extrication gloves? I am looking for something that will protect my hands from glass, sharp objects etc.. but will also be flexible enough for patient care. On my Vol. FD, I'm usually on the squad if we get a car accident so the only protection I have are my regular rubber gloves. I have gotton cut by small shards of glass several times that went right through those gloves, and I would like something with more protection espesially when there is blood involved.

My department issues out the Ringers with the Bloodborne pathogen protection. I like the gloves, have used them several times. I would recommend Ringers if you need to get extrication gloves. Remember even though you might have to pay for this, how much do you value your life against others. I tried Mechanics one time, and one time only...they did not protect against glass slivers at all. It went right through the glove.

I don't mind the cut part i just don't like their blood in my cut :-)
I thought I heard somewhere that it's something like a 1 in 3 chance of contracting one of the hepatitis's- can't remember which one and what letter they're up to now!!! Scary odds....
I used to just wear leather riggers gloves with a set of nitriles underneath. Cheap enough not to worry about contamination from other products and with good flexibility for fiddley work. Somehting like this brand http://www.seton.net.au/images/firstaid/personal/S0467.jpg

I agree with Justin on the Mechanix gloves, I have bought them for all of my personnel that run on rescue. They are cheap and easy to replace when they get blood on them.

I have to honestly admit (we run ALOT of cut jobs) go to the local home depot and find something that works for you and is pretty cheap, I've used ringers, shelby, mechanics, fire, leather...... eventually they all get holes the expensive ones don't last any longer then the cheap ones.

What ever happened to wearing a fire or extrication glove with a good quality EMS glove underneath like a P2?
Take the glove off once you have removed the patient from the car and work with the EMS gloves from beneath.

Some of the knit kevlar gloves are only about $9.00 per pair.
