Hi all...Well this old dog did it....Last weekend I took the plunge and attended (and also completed) a Firefighter Survival Course....I have to tell you it really opened my eyes...BUT, what I really came to realize is that the easiest way to "survive" is to never put yourself (or your men/women) in the situation in the first place. Proper size up, proper leadership, and good decision making can make all the difference...we all had the same "lessons" in Firefighter I or "Essentials" if you are an old dog...LOL...we need to remember and reinforce those "basic" rules..it just might save your butt....Only one person can save your butt...and that person is you..!!! Train as we fight....its not a game...Stay safe all and always keep the faith..........Paul

We had firefighter survival refresher training last week. We have access to an old 3-story building and can do wall breaching, firefighter rescue and rope bailout evolutions to our hearts' content.

This stuff has to be practiced regularly so that it becomes instinct. Although, by the time I breach a wall and squirm through my butt's going to be afire. 14 1/2 inches is just a tad narrow.
Know exactly what you mean....and the idea of coming down a 3 story ladder head first doesn't do much for the pucker factor either....LOL...we had a person on my "team" during class that ....well, lets just say he wasn't too keen on climbing....I told him the old addage used in the military...."You don't have to like it....you just have to do it..." When we took a break for lunch the instructor told us not to eat more than what our masks could hold.....sort of knew then that we had some "fun" coming.....LOL....Take care and stay safe...........Paul
