Volunteer Fire Service in Crisis

This is a feature that WIVB in Buffalo NY did that aired today. While they tried to make the claim as the title suggests, there really wasn't much meat to it. Hopefully it will draw attention to the need for volunteers nonetheless.

Comment by Firedog on May 14, 2009 at 3:23pm: Great pece, The gentleman states that he knows no Vfd that will turn away members does not live in Texas.I was a member of the local VFD. I have 30 yrs in service in a major city department and have been a company officer for 9 years .I have multple years as EMT -P and I tried to bring command structure , safety , leadership skills to this organization but I was looked at and treated as the first day on the job. We have since parted ways and the still have no accountability in their department. I thought it was all about the community effort but it is truly about their turf. Everyone stay safe

Comment by Fireman 95-18 on December 22, 2008 at 6:57am: News hardly ever sides with us I run with a volunteer department and I've been doing so for little over a year and in that time we have failed to make 3 or less calls (in which case we needed mutal aid) but we haven't lost any members as a matter of fact two new canidates so as far as I see it the economy really dosen't have that big an impact

Comment by Terry Ingram, Sr. on November 21, 2008 at 11:25am: NOT TO MENTION , AT LEAST IN MY STATE, THE ADDED EXTRA HOURS OF TRAINING YOU MUST KEEP UP WITH TO REMAIN A VOLUNTEER. ESPECIALLY IN THE EMS SECTION. MY DEPARTMENT HAS NO SQUAD, BUT THEY HAVE FIRST RESPONDERS. THE DEPARTMENT NEXT TO OUR TOWN HAS A SQUAD, THEY MAKE OUR SQUAD RUNS. NOW THEY HAVE PROBLEMS KEEPING MANPOWER FOR THIER DAY SHIFT. SO NOW THEY BRING THIER SQUAD OVER DURING THE DAY TO OUR STATION BECAUSE WE HAVE PAID AND VOLUNTEERS.
