This was Squad 46, which is a medical responder unit. In the city, instead of sending an engine, squads are sent manned with at least an EMT chauffeur, and at least one Paramedic. What normally happens is a basic ambulance needs ALS intervention and the Paramedic from the Squad rides in. The Squad picks up the Paramedic at the receiving hospital. Should the squad be running behind the ambulance transporting to the hospital? Probably not, but it's done all the time. I would be willing to bet SOGs would be looked at.

According to the article the accident occurred as a result of the rescue truck responding emergency following an ambulance that was transporting a patient to a hospital with lights and sirens activated. A vehicle yielded for the ambulance and then struck the rescue truck following. Is that a normal procedure to have a rescue truck respond emergency behind a transporting ambulance?
