Rome Newswire video of firefighters from Rome Fire Engines 4 and 1 along with Quint 3, Ladder 1, and Rescue 1 work to make access to the attic of a house following a structure fire. After an interior attack knocked down flames in the rear bedroom, smoke continued to pour from the attic area, prompting the actions seen in the clip. June 2, 2010

Granted this video was capture post knock down and these firefighters are operating in the overhaul phase. A continued size up clearly reveals that these firefighters are opening up to expose the attic from the Windward side. If the attic space cannot be exposed from pulling ceilings then I would prefer opening the gable from the Leeward wall or opening up the roof. This is a low pitch roof. First choice is to pull ceilings. It is NOT a safe practice having a firefighter with a metal ladder working that close to the electric service lines unless as stated in a previous comment the power has been cut at the pole, confirmed and communicated to everyone on the fire ground.

Ok This a video late in the game... But the quick camera view of what appears to be the fire room window shows charring in the soffit. Opening up the soffit will most likely show the area that the fire easily spreads into the attic. Stop with the gable vent operations!!!. Its too cumbersome....unless the roof is not an option due to heavy fire involvement. Go topside don't guess where the fire is.... find out and be sure. The only way is to let all the smoke rise up and out you will quickly see what ya got.. Stay safe.

I would think that pulling the ceiling inside would be safer then working next to the power lines, unless they have been cut at the pole.

Somebody needs to shut their PASS off....

That gable must have been the best place to access, but it is scary close to the power drop.
