From Youtube, cameras catch a house fire explode as a result of a backdraft. Very intense and extremely devastating.

In reviewing the video looking at the explosion does not look like a Backdraft to me, the should have been yellow brown colored smoke, the building had self vented, I agree with Danny on his understanding of fire behavior looks more like a smoke explision to me, but it also could have been a broken gas line.

Not a Backdraft?....Not a Flashover?.... Should we look into smoke explosions?.... As it appears on the video the working fire is located and vented to the rear of the structure on the B/C or C side. When the explosion takes place it originates near the D or D/C side. Fire Behavior 101 says just because the structure is ventilated does not mean all the heated smoke and gases are going to exit. If a build up of super heated smoke and gases contained in another part of the structure was introduced to flames then "KABOOM". This could include the crawl space.... Just a thought.

To russ allen, just because a building seems to have self ventilated already does not mean a back draft can not still occur. Or a smoke explosion or flash over even for that matter

Wow is all I got to say, you just ever know what is going to happen. Like we all say no run is ever the same routine, the only thing that I wonder is if all of our fellow firefighters are ok and came back from the incident without any injury.

Ya, I saw that on the news. Plus, with the view of it from straight on."Houston...we have lift-off," or "Houston...we have a problem", immediately comes to mind. That was a heck of a hic-up!
