Gary IN) Fully-Involved House

It is amazing that nobody called the fire department on this one! Battalion 7 comes across the radio advising of a working house fire at 24th and Clay, on arrival first due Engine 12 grabbed a hydrant and made short work of the fire using two lines. Nobody was injured at the fire scene. April 17, 2010.

Comment by Jeff Cole on April 25, 2010 at 12:58pm: I see no advantage of starting an attack on a fully involved vacant fire without securing a hydrant line. Otherwise you have nothing more than a 500 gallon 'for sure' water supply. The place is gone, nothing to save. However it did take awhile to even make a forward lay. But Gary see's more work in a week than many of us pc screen critics. My only tactical debate is that I would either hit it with the deck gun, or at least pull a 2.5". I rarely see them use 2.5"'s, rather multiple smaller lines. I see no advantage of yard breathing here either.

An engine company's job should be to secure a water supply, as oppossed to waiting for another company that hasn't arrived yet. There ARE times that may be the best option, but not here.
