They're climbing up buildings, fighting fires and learning how to save a life, and they're only teenagers.

KMBC's Bev Chapman reported that Camp Inferno is changing lives in Overland Park. This year, girls from around the United States were joined by students from France and Canada for the week-long camp.

When the camp started four years ago, it was designed as a recruiting tool. The camp gives girls a look at what it's like to become a firefighter.

Catie Pannell, who is now a cadet with the Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department, said she got hooked when she went to Camp Inferno two years ago.

"You know, it was a great start to my career," Pannell said.

She signed on with KCKFD last summer. She has completed emergency medical training and she has an associates degree in fire science.

"I'm getting ready to start paramedic training in August and continue my education getting a bachelor's degree in public administration, probably with an emphasis in fire service management," Pannell said.

Camp Inferno will graduate 25 students on Friday.

So far, at least two Camp Inferno graduates have entered fire training in the metro area.
