About Me:: I am originally from Vienna, Virginia and started my Public Safety career in 1984 as a Police Explorer with the Fairfax County Police Department. In 1986, I left the Police Explorer Program and joined the Fair Oaks Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company # 21, one of the volunteer Fire and Rescue Departments within the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue System. In 1988, I moved to South Carolina to attend college at Clemson University. I immediately started to volunteer with the Clemson University Fire-EMS Department and in January, 1989 became a part-time employee of that Department as a Firefighter/EMT. In 1990, I started to volunteer with the Pendleton Area Rescue Squad in nearby Anderson County, South Carolina, where I became a Nationally Registered EMT-Paramedic, as well as a Technical Rescue / Haz-Mat Technician. Upon completion of my paramedic program, I was hired full-time by Medshore/Anderson EMS in Anderson, South Carolina, becoming an Operations Field Supervisor in 1993. In 1994, Clemson University offered me a full-time position as a Firefighter/Paramedic which I accepted. At the same time, I was also was offered part-time paramedic employment by Oconee EMS and Pickens County EMS, both of which I also accepted. I further served on the Pickens County, South Carolina Haz-Mat Team as a Specialist. In 1995, I was elected as Vice-President of the South Carolina EMS Educator's Association, a position I held for 3 years. In 1998, Medshore/Anderson EMS extended an offer of employment to become an Upstate South Carolina Operations Supervisor, responsible for Technical Rescue, Shift Supervision of field/operational personnel, ALS Back-up for 8 volunteer rescue squads, and 911 communication center supervision. After 10 years with Clemson University Fire-EMS, I left that Department to accept that position. I moved back to Virginia after a year in 1999 to pursue further career aspirations.

I now am a retired Firefighter/Paramedic, who officially retired at the rank of Captain from the Caroline County, Virginia Department of Fire-Rescue & Emergency Management in November, 2008. Prior to working for Caroline County, I was employed by the Stafford County Department of Fire and Rescue, serving as a Lieutenant, splitting time between the Training Division and as a Fire/EMS Field Officer. I also volunteered as a Fire Suppression Officer / EMS Officer with the Chancellor Volunteer Fire Department in Spotsylvania County, Virginia Company-6 (Salem Church). While at Chancellor, in 2003, I was the OIC for a 3rd due structure fire. My engine arrived first after the other companies scratched. Upon arrival we encountered a 1 story ranch house with smoke coming from the eaves. Dispatch had informed us as to where the occupant said she was. After a quick lap, there was no indication that the occupant had escaped. While I was making my lap, my nozzle man pullled a hose line and started to force entry. Once entry was made, inside, we encountered heavy smoke and high heat. We immediately started a methodical quick search on the way to the location that the occupant last told dispatch where she was. Once we found the bedroom, both my nozzle man and I found the victim curled up in the corner between the bed the wall. This was within 1 minute of entry. We removed the victim, who was unconscious to a waiting ALS unit. The victim survived the fire and was released from the hospital a week later. While we were searching, the 4th due Engine had picked up our hose line and was doing fire suppression. I must say that was the best day of my firefighting career.

in 2008, I was appointed by the King William County, Virginia Board of Supervisors to the King William Emergency Services / All-Hazards Commission, of which I spent 3 years as Chairman. I also was appointed as the Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator. I held those positions until late 2011.

Currently, I am a member of the Central Fire Department in Pickens County, SC, and the Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company in Loudoun County, VA.

I was also a Certified EMD/Fire Dispatcher and have won a National APCO Award for Team Performance during a MCI in Caroline County, Virginia in 2005. I also have been awarded numerous Meritorious Service, 3 Life Saving Awards, and a heroism award during my career.I have been very blessed for having been a firefighter for 37 years. Best job one could ask for!

My hobbies include sports (ice hockey, football, baseball, golf), collecting firematic items (challenge coins, die-cast fire engines / ambulances, patches, collector cards), collecting baseball cards, collecting hockey pucks, and listening to Fire / Rescue radio traffic.

Budget Time : Part 2

Well, Thursday night came and went. Basically, in my eyes, the entire budget process that the Commission I sit on worked on for almost 4 hours was a total waste of time. Yes, every department except 1 had a representative there to explain and justify their budget requuests, but some of the people the departments sent had no idea why they were there and had no clue what a line item buget is. It is Budget Time for FY 2011. Hard to believe it is upon us already because it seems like we ust got done working on last year's budgets.
