I spent the majority of my week at the Firehouse World conference, where I was working in the
FireRescue booth. I personally love my “booth time,” as it affords me a chance to chat with our readers and get ideas for future articles.
This year, our booth was positioned close to an architecture firm. I had spoken with the lead architect before, specifically when I was covering past F.I.E.R.O. Fire Station Design Symposiums where he had been a presenter and won several design awards. (F.I.E.R.O. = the Fire Industry Equipment Research Organization.)
The architect inquired as to why
FireRescue hasn’t covered fire station design more. I explained to him that we traditionally cover fire station design once a year, in addition to our pre- and post-show coverage of F.I.E.R.O., for which
FireRescue is a co-sponsor.
Our conversation got me thinking about whether we should be covering this topic more. So I ask you:
Do you want to know more about fire station design? There’s certainly a lot to cover—site selection, training facilities, joint-use facilities, change orders, renovations, maintenance costs, ADA, PPE storage, LEED, lighting, workout facilities, station safety, to name a few topics.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic. Also, do you have experience in fire station design? Are you on a site selection committee? Are you involved in the planning and design of facilities in your area? Perhaps you want to be included but don’t feel informed enough about fire station design to volunteer for the task.
Finally, if you’re interested in attending a design symposium, check out the details for this year’s F.I.E.R.O. Fire Station Design Symposium at
