Excitement, disbelief at local fire department after winning nationwide contest
05:27 PM EDT on Saturday, April 25, 2009
Reported by Brian Farrell
POWELLSVILLE - Kent Williams was among the crowd of firefighters beaming Friday at the Powellsville Volunteer Fire Department in Bertie County.
"We grabbed the bull by the horns, and we pulled her down, and we got us a brand new truck for doing it."
The 33-member department managed to win a Tradition ES Pumper, the prize in a nationwide essay contest which the chief’s wife, Cheryl Powell, entered. In her writing, she outlined Powellsville’s desperate need for the truck, which will replace one bought in the 1970’s.
