Truck Fire With Magnesium Fireworks

This truck fire appeared routine on arrival. The driver reported no occupants in the truck and no hazmats in the box. You’ll see a quick knock down with water and foam, but burning magnesium kept burning through the foam blanket. Usually more H2O will suppress this type of burning metal fire, but sand was used for final extinguishment in this case.

Comment by ian wilcox on September 10, 2011 at 1:50pm: we have come across a few magnesium parts in vehicle fires,once a set of magnesium mags,another magnesium engine block both times we had to use sand to finally extinguish the fires,i just found out thea the transfer case in chev 4x4's is also magnesium as i had to weld one
