Amazing. All I want is enough money to get running water and a septic system at my station. That would make me happy as could be.

That said, Jim Owens says the "The repubs tried to kill the fire act every year". If the Republicans wanted to kill it - they could have, as they had a majority. They actually kept adding money to the amount that the president wanted to put into the program.

But it is more fun to blame the republicans I guess.

I think it should be the local communities responsibilty to fund stations. Why should my money go to a community that would rather spend money on some other program that only benefits them, and not on public safety.Locals have to decide what is a priority for their communities, and not expect the rest of the country to pay for their lifestyles. You choose where you live.

Donald makes a good point. Using stimulus money to prop up insolvent corporations is not an answer. Nor is giving it to folks to spend. Bush tried this twice, and it didn't work either time. $600 for me went to pay off debt to credit cards, and in turn straight up the ladder to the nicely decorated office of a bank CEO who then took his bonus, in spite of the fact that his company was insolvent.

As a small business owner, my job is to keep my company in the black, and if I can't do this, well, tough darts. I am done, no bonus, no stock options, no limo, nothing. Why are we allowing these corporate pirates to continue to loot our national treasury when they could not maintain the companies they made way too much to manage?

it doesnt matter where the money goes as long as it works. if it were to "work" then the economy would turn around and everyone would benefit (for us, no more layoffs or budget cuts). unfortunately, spending money has never worked. giving money to people so they can go spend it at walmart on foreign products just sends the money to china. obama needs to see that we have to let these corporations fail. "You ran your business into the ground?? Here's 500 mil."

my understanding from talking to some people in DC is that this will be like the fire act grants, but seperate program like SAFER and the fire prevention grants. Dont know about the matching if it will be the same or if this is 100% grant. Readingthe fire act grant there was a limit on how much federal funding you could recieve in a year, dont know how this will fit into that. My substation is an old horse barn from the 30's, only fits one engine barely and is falling down, hope something comes thru.

Is this 500mil in addition to another amount? Are they adding building construction to the other categories or is this a stand alone program or is this the only thing we can go for, and in what year? We could sure use another bay.

Truth be told, its starting to look like the bulk of the stimulus package will go to fatcat CEO's for their bonuses. Screw public safety, screw the fire service, and screw the people who pay the tab. Don't look for any real change from this, its not about government spending, its about corporate greed. Nothing new, and nothing will change until we demand some accountability from CEO's who can't keep their companies solvent.

We are the ones who will end up paying for all of the package.More than likely the money will all go to Cities and the folks out in the sticks (who really need help)will never see a dime . But we can feel good because our money went to pay for the stimulus.

What bothers me is how many of our brothers and sisters are hurting right now...all the FS's that have closed in Georgia and FDNY...to name a couple, how much relief will they get?? lets get those stations up and running!!!
Comment by Jim Owens on February 10, 2009 at 10:03pm
at 500 million that doesnt build many stations figuring the average station is well over 1 million. but this being a federal program you know it will never go away, they never do. The repubs tried to kill the fire act every year but the congressmen seeing the benefit to local communities will never kill it. They love to have thier pics taken in front of a new truck. They will salivate over cutting the ribbon on a new station in thier districts!
