Thanks for your message. All too often, some younger firefighters see "stuff" burning and think of it as all Class A material from the "ol' days!" Not even close!! Just as you pointed out, there is all type of new crap burning, a great of which is processed with derivatives of butyl and formaldehyde! This crap doesn't have to be inhaled. If you're not wearing your full PPE, it can be absorbed through the pores of your skin!
in many residential fires you run a risk of toxic elements in the smoke
one of the nastiest is the fumes from pvc pipe and pvc insulation. this is highly toxic and highly irritating to the mucus membranes and lung tissue. a snootful can make you pass out very quickly.
when your chief says masks on do it without question!
