Roadside Memorials,

Are they a hazardous distraction on our highway's and rural roads that can possibly cause more accidents ?
Or are they a sobering reminder that maybe we should slow down on this sharp corner,Don't drink and drive, perhaps not answer that cell phone or otherwise less distractions and more focusing on the road in front of us! Some people say tear down these memorials because they could be distracting,Others say leave them up to remind everyone that we need to be more careful while driving. What say you?

they are prevalent around here and thought they were nice reminders if simple and kept up. Then I was traveling this highway in Az and saw memorial after memorial , went on for miles. It got my attention and I sure the heck paid more attention to the road and traffic after that . Since then I have traveled that road often and now I know why there are so many memorials on that road . People drive like crazy on it

Maybe we'll get lucky and the "distracted" drivers will stop talking on their cell phones and use it to take a picture to share with their friends. Over course at their speed it would be blurry. TCSS

I am with the others - if they aren't a road hazard I think they are fine. There is one I pass almost daily and it reminds me of the incident that occurred there, now many years ago.

Just as information, we had a discussion on this topic probably a year ago; you might try searching in the discussions. There were some interesting viewpoints expressed.

As long as they aren't a full blown grotto, I don't see a problem with them. In some places, the road crews are told to take them down and in other areas, they are left up. If they don't have to be mowed or trimmed around, they usually stay up.
And trust me; distracted drivers won't even know that they are there. They will be too busy talking on the phone or watching a movie as they speed along at 85 mph.

If they don't block the road or it's access I say leave them up. It might remind that easily distracted driver to focus. Hypocritical yes but they need to learn somewhere. For the rest of us, we're already focused. TCSS
