Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...October 18, 2009
Today we had a great drill. My husband told me I should rename this blog, "Running to a Drill," since that's what I always seem to be doing. It was a vehicle extrication drill and taught by one of my officers. I learned things I hadn't learned at school and maybe I wasn't ready to learn at that time anyway (perhaps FF 2). For example, the direction to put the fire out if it's in the hood, and the proper way to set the scene with the yellow tarp, cones, and all the equipment on the tarp. I didn't get how to hook up the generator but I remember I did it once before so I guess I won't worry about that right now! We learned the correct way to cut the windshield, doors, and more importantly, we learned WHY we were doing things not just do this when you're at a scene.
Lastly, the one thing I never thought of was telling the patient not to move their head when you approach the scene. I think when we are taught something by someone so experienced and thorough it makes it sink into our brains more.
Oh happy Monday, right?
