Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...April 5, 2009

Time just seems to be whizzing by for me lately. This weekend brought us our pancake breakfast at the firehouse, and now that I am actually getting to know people, it makes it more fun.

I have been spending quite a bit of time around the firehouse lately, probably because I don't have any friends other than firefighters where I live, and my old friends live so far away. During this tough time getting close to Easter, even at my age, I seem to need to be with people that remind me of the times I spent with my father. The pancake breakfast is that perfect time, because you see the older people and the younger people working together in harmony for a common good. I am especially fond of Bob, who I designated as the juice pourer yesterday. Bob is so frail, he reminds me of how my Dad was about the last 6 months of his life. I was thinking it must be hard to be an older firefighter and see the young guys come in with so much gusto and think I used to be like that.

In any event, nothing new to report, just working the two jobs, trying to keep sane from the scarey place I always mention, and trying to find a place where I fit in.

Have a nice week everyone.

Hi Ed, thank you for that nice note. It's funny...I've never seen change happen so slowly as in the fire department. But you know the people in charge, they seem to me to make the right changes. Sometimes doing things slowly gives us time to think and contemplate. Have a nice day, Denise

I am one of those old guys Denise, and I think I speak for all. Yes it is a little hard to look back and think "Yeh I used to have all that energy too", but the thing I think about most is whether the new generation will give our proud profession the dedication and respect that we did, this is not just a job, it is a lifetime commitment to help keep our Great Country safe and to minimize the effects that untoward situations has on those around us, sometimes heroic acts are performed but most of the time we are just a bunch of people who have dedicated our lives to helping others (No medals, marching bands, ticker tape parades or praise) Just the personal satisfaction that what we did made someone else’s life better. You sound as if your heart is truly heading in the right direction. Keep up the good work and remember change for improvement is always good, but change just for the sake of change can be destructive just as tradition just for tradition can be a bad thing. (Some traditions should never be forgotten though) BE SAFE and I wish you a most rewarding and satisfying career, keep up the good work.
