Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...May 16, 2011

Yesterday was my first experience at Live Burn training at the Union County Fire Academy.

I was the accountability officer and participated in the clean-up. Even though I didn't head into the structure it was so beneficial that I was there. Everything from my initial training was enforced because if it is your first time at live burn training (I was with alot of the newer guys) it's like an entirely new learning experience. Also from an accountability standpoint, this time I learned how people were re-assigned and how to account for their whereabouts while being glued to the IC's side.

I am so tired today. LOL

PS The smell of burning hay is not the same as a true structure fire. I didn't mind taking a shower this time and getting the smell out of my hair. Although when I went out with a fellow firefighter for ice cream hours later and couldn't help saying, "smell my hair" like 10 times.

I am truly insane. Yes?

Well done! The smell will last a while. We hosted a real live burn for 50+ firefighters and 6 departments yesterday and the smell is still in my hair and on my hands.. no matter how many times I wash em'. It's normal :) you'll love it.
