MUST READ FIRE FIGTHER GAS SERIOUSLY INJURED

CRIMORA — A Crimora man is in serious condition at U.Va. Medical Center in Charlottesville after his 11-year-old son crashed the family car early Saturday morning with five passengers inside, according to a police report.

Virginia State Police said the accident took place on Thoroughfare Road in Crimora, about a 1/2 mile north of Va. 612. Police said the 11-year-old son of Michael Powell, 31, was driving his father’s 1983 Chevrolet Monte Carlo shortly after midnight when he lost control of the car.

The boy was headed north when the car began to slide back and forth across the road, 1st Sgt. Scott VanLear said. The car crossed the southbound lane, leaving the road and striking a concrete culvert drain.

“There were several people injured,” VanLear said.

The boy was traveling an estimated 60 mph, five miles an hour over the posted speed limit, VanLear said. He was wearing a seatbelt.

Rescue personnel took Powell, who was one of three people in the front seat of the car, to Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville with thoracic injuries, VanLear said. He was later transferred to U.Va. Medical Center. Another front-seat passenger, 30-year-old Kelly Scott, was airlifted to Charlottesville with spinal fractures. She was listed in serious condition Tuesday afternoon.

VanLear said a 19-year-old man in the car was uninjured. A 7-year-old boy was treated at Augusta Medical Center and released. A fifth passenger, listed only as a male in the police report, suffered minor injuries.

Asked why the boy was operating the car, VanLear declined to speculate. “It’s under investigation,” he said.

Several charges are pending against Powell. The boy was charged with reckless driving, VanLear said.
