is an 8 year old to young to learn healthcare provider CPR?

my son is very smart for his age, and i think he is plenty strong enough. he hits the gym with me and is an impressive 102lbs. at 6 years old we let him take the yearly dept. refresher on fire ext. and he put out a class b burn with a 5lb ext. so do you think he is to young? i gave him the option to take the full class, and he wants to, only thing i'll have to have someone do for him is read the test and key. is it a bad idea, or should i let him at it?

Comment by Rob on November 23, 2008 at 9:13pm: i've got other friends as parents, that have 12 year old daughters, who took it so they could baby sit and passed, if he does pass he will be state cert and have his card, and no way would he step in when a compent adult is already working. it will include aed use, infant, child and adult. kenny, i understand where you are coming from, but my next question would be is he going to have a thought in his head that he wishes he could do something? for example, if the lunch lady at school drops while he is in line, he's gonna have a level of emotional stress just from that. he is in no way part of the fire or ems field, nor will be until he reaches explorer age.

If he happens to be the only one around he could save a life. You must be very proud of him Dad. TCSS

Comment by kenny goines on November 23, 2008 at 8:54pm: This is just my opinion, but ABSOLUTELY!!, The question is not about ability for me, it about him being to young to be put in that kind of situation. I know lots of adults that cannot handle it themselves if you ask me you are definately asking for emotional trouble in the future if you allow him to do it!!!
