Getting volunteers to attend training.....

Recently.....my department has had the probably not so uncommon issue of not being able to get folks to training. No matter what the training is over....or how exciting I try and make it I just can't seem to get some people to attend. I have asked what I could do to make things more attractive....and I get no response.

Its to the point now where the Chief is considering putting people on a probationary status until they can start attending training on a regular basis.

I would welcome any ideas!!!!

Written policy or "rules" on what is expected for attendance at trainings(and enforce it). If they don't want to follow the rules then you don't want them on the fireground. At a training we changed the way we lay in for structure fires with long lanes, trained on the procedures and discussed the change for the next two months. The next structure fire with a long lane the engine driver couldn't figure out why the first tanker followed him in, we've never done it that way for the 25 yrs he'd been on(he wasn't at a training or meeting for 3 months) needless to say he wasn't on the dept. much longer after that. Speaking as a fire officer if the firefighter can't follow a simple rule for attendance how do I know they'll follow a command at a scene. If you're volly dept. don't fall for the excuse that it's "just" a volunteer dept. otherwise we carry gear/equipment on the trucks so the homeowner and bystanders can put them on and be the firefighters, you're a firefighter because of the gear/equipment WITH the training. Don't feel bad we had the same problems years ago until we started putting some bite with the attendance rule and then things started to change.

As far as ideas try and play games I just taught a district maps class with our set of volunteers and mixed in some paid guys and did teams and just played a team on team game and they loved it everyone worked together as one and that in the end is the ultimate goal in my book we that and district familiarization

Professional standards will solve your problem. Regardless of your status, a policy on the required mandatory requirements for training attendance. Without a policy, the chief really has no reason to place anyone on probationary status. Otherwise it is a social club.
