Fighting Fire Without Breathing Apparatus ("Good Morning")

Can you fight/ penetrate Fire with out breathing apparatus? Here in the Philippines we fight fire without breathing apparatus ,here in my Place(Cagayan De Oro City) I do not know what breathing apparatus is because we have none and i don't even see what kind of thing is that .What we use to protect ourselves in times of conflagration is by using a Good Morning,Do you know what Good morning is ? That's not what you Think, Good morning Is a brand of towel here in the Philippines. What we do is to buy the cheap towel worth 10 to 15 pesos(provided by us) and when times we responded a Fire Call what we do is to wet that towel and put it to our face for smoke protection against suffocation and (presto) we will enter a burning building w/o hesitation don't even know what will happened to us next.,funny isn't it ? But its a reality here.

Reading this makes me see how well off we are in the USA. My helmet is off to you and your Department for doing your job without equipment. May God be with you.

Thirty or forty years ago, fire fighting without the use of breathing apparatus was a common occurrence. So yes it can be done, but at great risk to the firefighters who do it.

You must have a very high rate of injury/illness from smoke inhalation, carbon monoxide poisoning and such.

My hat is off to you and your brother firefighters for going in without the benefit of SCBA. Stay safe!

Reading this, you realise how lucky we are to have funding, equipment, training, etc.

SCBA is a must have, but I don't know how you will change the culture to include it as a vital piece of equipment.
