For those of you who have responded to my forum "top five issues facing ff's," you have seen that ff fitness is one of the issues that alot of ff's are thinking about. The sad thing is... its true!!!! While attending FDIC this year, I saw more overweight people then I ever wanted to. I'm talking a hostess shop could have opened and sold out in five minutes!!!! Okay... so maybe that last part isnt true but the point is we as ff's face a dangerous, physically demanding job on a daily basis and for some, the most exercise we get is walking from the bunk room to the kitchen table. Okay... enough rambling... what are we going to do about it? Well I cant make you get on the treadmill but I have an idea that I hope will inspire. FFN Biggest Loser Challenge!!!! Wait... is that copyrighted? Oh well... is copyrighted even a word? lol. Okay so heres how it works... Use this blog page to post your starting weight. Come back as often as you like to post your progress. After six months we declare a winner. What do I win you ask???? How bout a healther life and a new body to show off. (Unless the webchief feels like pitching in some cabbage for a shiny new car or something lol.) I can hear it already. "what about you dustin??? are you going to be in the contest too???" As a matter of fact I am!!!! I may not need to lose a whole lot of weight but anyone can always be healther. So... here goes... just got on the scale. My starting weight is 178. One problem I do have is high BP so I'm gona track that too and see if I can bring it down. Starting BP (damn... taking your own bp is not easy lol)... 158/98. Yeah, I told you it was high lol.

Dont be afraid to join the group "fitness for Emergency Services." Theres alot of good people with alot of good ideas there that can help you get started. Also, there is a ton of information online that you can find about losing weight properly and eating healthy so check it out!!! Okay kids... lets get started!!!

Ok, here is the UGLY truth. I am 6' 45 years old and weigh......gulp....356. Yes, my BP is borderline high and (luckily) my cholesterol is good. I will (as I have for years) try to eat less and move more. Very simple. Believe it or not, I only weighed about 25lbs less when I passed the agility test for our department. That was 14 years ago though. I've always been large but been able to move/do the job well. No complaints from my co-workers about me "pulling my own weight" but I really feel it lately. Of course the ball breaking is relentless. Got to have a thick skin on this job.

Believe it or not there is a fire department in the state of Michigan that has a PT requirement. Not only are they required to work out for 1 hour each shift but every six months or year (I can't remember) they have to pass a PT test or they get fired, and these guys are Union. If I remember right their Union was all about this.

I am 5'7 with a large build. My current weight is 220 as of this morning. I am a healthy person. No high BP or anything. I have gained over 60 pounds after highschool. Stressful events have lead me to turn to food, (which was a big mistake.) I'm not a smoker, I have no addictions, not a heavy drinker. I guess food is my weakness! My plan is to walk every morning, and change my eating habits. Ill probably go back on weight watchers. They have a great program that teaches you to eat the healthier foods. I need to do this before I go to standards next year or I will fail horibly!!!!!! Wish me luck

I work for a department that is very supportive of its PT program. We have invested in equipment and training to help our members maintain their health. We also require annual physicals, including body comp and stress test. Watching weight is a good place to start, but is only part of the picture. Our members are expected to perform very physical tasks under stressfull situations with no warmup time. You need only look at the NIOSH reports to figure out what is killing our members. A well supported PT and medical monitoring program will save more lives then any RIT training I have ever received.

Ok, I'm 6' and 225. Blood pressure is all over the board due to stress. My FF physical this year had me @ 158/78. I gave blood 2 days later and they had it at 110/70. I tested it the following weekend and I was 120/70. As a volunteer FF, my day job is spent at a desk so I really need to get moving. The problem is time.

I HAVE BEEN LOSING WEIGHT NOW FOR SIX MONTHS. I WAS 276 LBS. AFTER I QUIT SMOKING. I AM NOW DOWN TO 217LB. AND FEELING GOOD. MY TARGET IS 200 LBS. THIS IS CHEATING BUT IT WORKS. I GOT AN APPETITE SUPRESSANT FROM MY DOCTOR CALLED PHETTERMINE AND I TOOK ONE ADAY AND SAW MY DOCTOR EVERY TWO WEEKS. MY B.P. IS GREAT NOW AND MY CHOLESTEROL IS GOOD AGAIN. WHAT ALSO HELPED ME WAS THE EDUCATION I GAVE MYSELF ON CALORIES. COUNT YOUR CALORIES. I KEEP MINE AT 1500 TO 1800 CALORIES ADAY. THE FIRST MONTH I LOST 32 LBS!!!
WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING YOU EAT ALONG WITH HOW MANY CALORIES IS IN IT. YOU WILL BE SURPRISED TO KNOW HOW MANY CALORIES YOU REALLY EAT. I WAS PROBALLY DOING 4000 TO 5000 CALORIES ADAY. DID YOU KNOW A LARGE CHOC. SHAKE HAS ABOUT 1000 CALORIES?? SOME FAST FOOD BURGERS ARE UP OVER 700 CALORIES. IT IS REALLY EASY ONCE YOU SEE FOR YOUR SELF THAT IT WORKS AND SEE WEIGHT MELTING OFF. EMAIL ME @ rthomas.thomasgarage@comcast.net and i will help you with any info. i have. STAY STRONG, ITS WORTH IT. ROBERT THOMAS, OHIO

Those of you with high BP should get your cholesterol checked. Exercise and diet can help but heredity has alot to do with your health. I am amazed at the number of people, including firefighters, in our area who are not over weight but are still having cardiac issues. Exercise, eat right, and get regular checkups which include lab work. Sometimes diet and execise is not enough. It is important to look at the whole picture.
