For those of you who have responded to my forum "top five issues facing ff's," you have seen that ff fitness is one of the issues that alot of ff's are thinking about. The sad thing is... its true!!!! While attending FDIC this year, I saw more overweight people then I ever wanted to. I'm talking a hostess shop could have opened and sold out in five minutes!!!! Okay... so maybe that last part isnt true but the point is we as ff's face a dangerous, physically demanding job on a daily basis and for some, the most exercise we get is walking from the bunk room to the kitchen table. Okay... enough rambling... what are we going to do about it? Well I cant make you get on the treadmill but I have an idea that I hope will inspire. FFN Biggest Loser Challenge!!!! Wait... is that copyrighted? Oh well... is copyrighted even a word? lol. Okay so heres how it works... Use this blog page to post your starting weight. Come back as often as you like to post your progress. After six months we declare a winner. What do I win you ask???? How bout a healther life and a new body to show off. (Unless the webchief feels like pitching in some cabbage for a shiny new car or something lol.) I can hear it already. "what about you dustin??? are you going to be in the contest too???" As a matter of fact I am!!!! I may not need to lose a whole lot of weight but anyone can always be healther. So... here goes... just got on the scale. My starting weight is 178. One problem I do have is high BP so I'm gona track that too and see if I can bring it down. Starting BP (damn... taking your own bp is not easy lol)... 158/98. Yeah, I told you it was high lol.

Dont be afraid to join the group "fitness for Emergency Services." Theres alot of good people with alot of good ideas there that can help you get started. Also, there is a ton of information online that you can find about losing weight properly and eating healthy so check it out!!! Okay kids... lets get started!!!

chicken is great also. but no breading on any of it. Red meats are for muscle building, so if you are trying to lose, then keep away from the red meat until you lose, then go back to the reds to build muscle.

Fish, and only fresh water fish, the salt water fish has too much sodium. Little sodium and alot of protein. Greens have alot of protein and the average person needs to drink at least half their body weight in ounces of water. I drink at least 140 oz. a day even though I am not 280lbs :) But the water flushes the fat and helps you keep hydrated with the workouts.

I, like several others that have already posted, started to change my lifestyle and eating habits several months ago. Horry County Fire/Rescue, SC has an individual that has developed a program for the entire department. His name is Michael Medieros and he has also worked with personnel on an individual basis if they needed more work. I was one of those people. I have been overweight my entire life....well at least since about 4th grade. Growing up my nickname was "Heavy' for obvious reasons. When I first started dating my wife, I weighed a ridiculous 315 lbs and I am 5' -10". The only known medical issue is that I had high cholesterol that was controlled with a "statin medication". I am proud to say that as of right now, I weigh 230 lbs and I am feeling incredible. My goal is to get into the 190's and I know that I can. I have not had my annual physical yet but I anticipate coming off the med's. My wife and I watch the TV show "TBL" every week and I have gotten alot out of it. Healthy eating habits and exercise are simple to change. I am not out killing myself with workouts at the gym 7 days aweek and I am certainly not starving myself. Good Luck to all of you and be safe at there. If you interested in contacting the Horry County Wellness Coordinator, he can be reached at 843-915-5190 M-F 8:00-17:00

Lots of Fresh Green Veggies everyone.... and fruit. Try to leave out Apples and carrots due to the high carbs they have. It may be healthy carbs but those foods are for maintaining, not losing. anything to get the heart rate racing and the sweat pouring is a good workout :)

I didn't add my height with my weight before. I am 5'11" and would like to be 185, 26 pounds to go :)

OK....I must say that this is the most fantastic idea. I live in Cody Wyoming and I just finished the "Cody's Biggest Loser Program". It was a great way for me to be held accountable for my weight and I met new people and I also got my hubby into it and he lost and now we both feel great! There is another one starting and I will be joining that one also because there are few more pounds I want to take off. My starting weight was 262lbs and I got down to 211lbs in 12 weeks!! It takes alot of commitment and heart but if you have it, you can do it. I would be glad to help anyone out as far as advice if anyone needs any. I have dieted pretty strictly and I got a trainer to help me with my exercise plan and WOW, I feel wonderful. I went from jogging on the treadmill for 45 seconds and being outta breath to joggin 20 minutes and feeling good. Just hit me up for info in you need. I think health is something we all take too lightly until we truely understand how your body feels with improvement. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!

Check out www.crossfit.com

I've dome a lot of physical training and I think this approach is the best I've seen, both philosophically and in terms of the hard science behind it.
