So i am moving to another state for work and and flying out in a few days and i have my own personal set of turnouts that I want to bring with me. Would i be able to check the gear with the rest of my luggage ? I have heard that the TSA runs all bags through different sensors and chemical testing and i know my turnouts have been exposed to all sorts of smoke and other chemicals while in fires and im afraid they will set off the sensors and i will have a problem with bringing the bag with me. Anyone have any ideas?

Wear them on the plane! That ought to be interesting.

Might want to clean them first...if you didn't already....worried about the chemicals and setting off alarms in the airport...but hanging them around or wearing them breathing in those same chemicals don't bother you....? Our SOP says...You wear them in a fire....you wash them afterwards...they look better, smell better, last longer, and last but not least they won't expose anyone to the nasty's that exist in fires....Stay safe....Keep the Faith....Paul...and yes, you could ship them out UPS (probably cheaper than the Airlines too(excess baggage)

I believe that you can run them through as normal checked baggage. I did that several years ago, but they were new and clean.

I also vote for shipping them by UPS/Fed Ex. It won't be too expensive and will save you the hassle of having to carry you gear around at the airport.

Is it any different if it checked in luggage as opposed to carry on luggage?

Interesting quandry. I'd say call the airport and ask them. Your worries make sense, and I don't see an issue. They'll obviously notice that you're a fireman. But then again, I'm a fireman, and TSA thinks a little different than I do.
