It's been a tragic day in Jefferson County, where a 26-year old Firefighter was killed while trying to put out silo fire. Our Katie Gibas joins us from Hounsfield with more.
HOUNSFIELD, N.Y. -- A Sackets Harbor Firefighter was killed in the line of duty Sunday morning while trying to put out a silo fire.
Crews were called to Robbins Farms in the Town of Hounsfield around 9:15 a.m. after a fire was reported at the same farm that had barn destroyed on Thursday in another fire.
This time, it was the silo that was burning, and tragically, it exploded while an assistant fire chief was up on top of it. Garrett Loomis, 26, suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Officials say no one else was hurt in the fire.
Loomis is survived by his parents and a brother. He was a 2001 graduate of Sackets Harbor High School and was just promoted to assistant chief this past week. Friends say he was also a career firefighter with the Fort Drum Fire Department.
At this point funeral arrangements are not set. Also, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
